Bonner Springs is a river city, situated along the banks of the Kaw River. The Kaw River is a popular place for canoeing and kayaking in the warmer months and for fishing year round. The river enhances the area’s natural beauty and is one of the many defining characteristics of Bonner Springs. While Bonner Springs is more of an extension of Kansas City in regards to recreational amenities, Edwardsville is much more of a bedroom community that offers residents short commutes to larger cities in the area such as Bonner Springs, Kansas City, Lawrence and Overland Park.
Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas, a major employer in the region as well as a source for education, cultural entertainment and athletic sporting events. Similarly, the University of Missouri in Kansas City also provides a boost to local economies while providing residents with a social outlet to experience the unique lifestyle associated with a major college campus. Other universities and institutions of higher learning in the region include Park College, Rockhurst College, Avila College, William Jewel College, Donnelly College and the Community Colleges of Johnson County, Kansas City and Penn Valley. The presence of these schools has had a tremendous impact on the local economy and has proven an influential to the area’s youth in aspiring them to pursue associate and Bachelor’s degrees.
The Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Unified School District is comprised of four schools which include Bonner Springs High School, Robert E. Clark Middle School, Bonner Springs Elementary and Edwardsville Elementary. Together, they strive to maintain low student to teacher ratios all the while preserving a safe environment for students to learn.
Downtown Bonner Springs is a shopper’s paradise where a variety of specialty shops and retail stores dot the sidewalks along Oak Street, Front Street and the surrounding areas of K-32. Intermingled between these stores are restaurants, delis, coffee shops, bakeries and other eateries that are capable of satisfying any appetite. During the summer months of June and July, outdoor music concerts are held on Thursday evening in Kelly Murphy Park. Dinner with friends in downtown Bonner Springs during the early evening hours followed by a concert in the park makes for an eventful night and is the popular choice for many locals this time of year. Other attractions located within five to 30 minutes of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville include visits to American Royal, Cabela’s, Country Club Plaza, Historic Fort Leavenworth, Holyfield Winery, Kansas City Children’s Museum, and Kansas City Symphony.
For sports enthusiasts, Kansas City is home to the NFL’s Chiefs and MLB’s Royals, and Professional Soccer’s Wizards. The Kansas Speedway, home to a NASCAR race event, is only two miles from Edwardsville. Also, the Universities of Kansas and Missouri, both Big 12 conference members, feature world-class athletic competitions in over 20 sports including basketball, baseball and football.
In addition to the recreational and entertainment amenities already mentioned, this region possesses a strong appreciation for the arts which is evident in cultural destinations such as the Kemper Museum of Modern Art, Liberty Memorial, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Strawberry Hill Museum, the New Dinner Theatre, Starlight Theater and the State Ballet of Missouri. All in all, living in Bonner Springs and Edwardsville provide citizens with a plethora of opportunities to relax and enjoy the region’s natural beauty while still experiencing the finest in big city life such as attending major sporting events and music concerts, dining at fine restaurants, experiencing Broadway shows at world-class performing arts venues and shopping at recognizable stores such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s.
